1. Greatest Hits West (смотри 3 пост)
Location: Various locations
Crossing the North American continent in a scant four hours, dawn settles on the Great Plains, the Rocky Mountains, and the coastal ranges and beaches of California before departing the western shore. We witness the geo-dramas of Yellowstone geysers, herds of horses and bison on the open range, the spectacular lighting of the Teton Range. Then in California, we see the massive sequoia, tule elk, a rainbow of wildflowers, the Yosemite Valley, and elephant seals on the beach. These are the great sunrise moments in nearly a dozen morning ecosystems of the west.
2. Island First Light (смотри 4 и 16 посты)
Location:Cadillac Mountain, Acadia National Park, Maine
At 1,532 feet, this is the highest vantage point along the North Atlantic seaboard. During certain times of year, the summit receives the rays of the first rising sun within the United States. The peak is composed of pink granite, and perched above a forest of spruce and pitch pine. Among the granite slabs are tiny sub-alpine plants such as cinquefoil, squat, gnarled trees, wild blueberries, and various sized boulders. The view of the Maine archipelago is unsurpassed, with the Cranberry Islands foremost in the southwest.
3. Katmai Bears (смотри 5 и 19 посты)
Location: Halo Bay, Katmai National Park, Alaska
They've had seven months of sleep, but now the world's largest population of unhunted brown bears are ready for the sun. They begin the morning in the meadow, playfully mating and grazing on the high protein tidal sedge. A bounding three year-old searches for Mom. The sun rises. The tide drops, Clam flats and the first tasty salmon of the season are revealed. Bears stake out their spot on the beach. Two males posture with the cowboy walk. The cubs claws grip and nurse for mom's high-fat milk. Adolescents chase each other at 35 mph for miles. Sleep lies distant.
4. Manatee Spring (смотри 6 и 16 посты)
Location: Homosassa Spring, Florida
Every winter, the two thousand pound West Indian manatees of Florida's Gulf Coast seek the warm clear waters of inland springs. There, they congregate and gently linger, feeding on plants amidst schools of jack. Spanish moss hangs from twisted limbs and filters the morning mist. Wood ducks nest overnight in the limbs of the nearby trees and take flight at first light. As the sun further brightens, the manatees meander over to check out the cameras, which are positioned split-surface to capture their exhalations every few minutes above and below the surface.
5. Teton Beaver (смотри 7 и 20 посты)
Location: Schwabacher's Landing, Moose, Wyoming
The nocturnal beavers have settled into a small tributary under the sheer cirque walls, rugged ridges and jagged peaks of the Teton Range. Their engineering skill has produced an 8 foot high dam and a new pond for those creatures of the day; a great blue heron fishing in the morning mist, ducks with their ducklings, trout, and a goldfinch feeding her chick. We witness these two communities as they pass each other during the crossroad of dawn.
6. Volcano Lagoon (смотри 9 и 17 посты)
Location: Augustine volcano, Alaska
A tidal lagoon flushes its night load of water under the shadow of the Augustine volcano, a perfect cone that last erupted in 1986. This is a land where the earth quakes uon average- every thirty sunrises. Yet nearby harbor seals are nonplussed. They lazily haul out to dry in the morning breeze. Tiny details of a spun web and lichen contrast the grand sky. Fireweed reclaims the blackened soil, while a distant strand of steam wisps its way into a cloudless sky.
7. Ninagiak Island (смотри 1, 17, 18 и 19 посты)
Location: Ninagiak Island, Katmai National Park, Alaska
An island beach awakes with a splash of brilliant color, over a hundred miles from the nearest town. Clouds flare on arctic terns swarming in aerial acrobatics. Oystercatchers chisel limpets from rocks. Horned and tufted puffins bob nearby, their shore-side burrows abandoned. A macro world is unveiled when a black turnstone flips a stone. Warmed beach fleas prance in front of snow-capped mountains. Bladder wrack rolls over pebbles on an incoming ripple. The sun slides behind a steep slope, while mew and glaucous gulls shout down an invading bald eagle.
8. Homer Takeoff (смотри 21 пост)
Location: Beluga Lake, Homer, Alaska
A few days after summer solstice and the red-necked grebes tend their nest. Ground fog drifts past the swimming birds, rarely airborne. Building materials arrive at one site, while newly-hatched chicks piggyback on the mother who leaves another. On the stillwater, shoreside floatplanes await their day’s load. The sun appears and the fog lifts. A pilot taxis and takes off into the fresh Alaskan sky. The grebes strut in late courtship, then start to dive for fish among the reeds.

29. Dawn of Cerro de La Muerte
Cerro de La Muerte, Costa Rica — We awake with the sun at 11,500 feet, the highest point in Costa Rica. Below are the silent distant twinkling lights of a city. As the crow flies, the Pacific lies 25 miles to the west. The Atlantic is 50 miles to the east. We sit astride a narrow band of land that is the isthmus between North and South America. Aside from a passing hummingbird, few animals can be found. But alpine flora abounds in this windswept cool blue habitat, only slowly thawed by the graphic reds of morning warmth. Shadows reveal the drops of melting ice from the previous night. We understand the perils for the tropical traveler here. This hill is known as "Cerro de La Muerte," the Mountain of Death, because many unsuspecting voyagers have been lost over the centuries.
30. Playa Grande Moonset
Playa Grande, Marino Las Baulas National Park, Guanacaste, Costa Rica — Once a month, the full moon dips into the waves of the pacific as the sun rises over the upper beach. Last Sunday he caught a 25 pound snook. As the sands dry, crabs dig their way to the surface, grain by grain. The soothingly eternal waves await the next full moon.
31. Cloudforest Waterfall
La Paz River, Vara Blanca, Costa Rica — The crater lake of the Poas Volcano drains from 9,000 feet into this high altitude cloudforest ravine. Stepping downward through a series of five waterfalls, we descend as the sun rises. Rays of light catch suspended water particles from the falling water, as green threads of life cling to sodden cliff walls. From within its pupa, an owl butterfly emerges with the increasing warmth of day, pumping fluid into its silken wings. Through the last rock opening, the water and sun burst out and down towards a restful pool, the famous La Paz waterfall.
32. Birds of Palo Verde
Tempisque Basin, Palo Verde National Park, Costa Rica — The last remaining water from the wet season attracts birdlife to this wide open seasonal marsh of west central Costa Rica. Brilliant reds and oranges streak across the fast moving and scattered clouds, reflected in the shallows. The moon sets. Light increases, as does the wind. Flocks of black-bellied whistling ducks hunker down in the face of its 25 mph persistent force. Long-legged Northern Jacana run jerkily, seeking insects and snails. White Ibis stiffen their necks in the direction of least resistance, reconfigured as living wind vanes. Roseate spoonbills huddle. Passing horses wade and graze.
33. Mayan Pyramid
The National Park of Tikal, Guatemala — Hidden within the heart of the Guatemalan rainforest, a 2,800 year old city was once home to nearly 100,000 Mayans. Today, the jungle has returned. Cries of howler monkeys pierce the dawn, while colorful parrots and toucans soar from branch to ancient temple. From atop the Lost World Pyramid, we see the red sun break the morning mists. This site once charted the solstices and planting seasons, and was accessed exclusively by the priests and the social elite. Each day's return of the sun was seen as a rebirth of the sun god Kinich Ahua. On this morning, we witness the magnificence of a lost human world and the ongoing life force of the Central American rainforest.

These are great sunrise moments in nearly a dozen morning ecosystems of the East.
